Alice dos ReisHer Dark Materials10.10.2026 - 21.11.2026

For the past few years, Alice dos Reis has been interested in the ways we describe and ascribe meaning to our ever-questioning of what lies beyond Earth. At times focusing on the physical aspects of what awaits beyond – such as outer space, and others on more spiritual aspects of the otherworldly, such as cults, and what constructs and drives belief. Working with film and tapestry, she has used narrative, both personal and fictional, as a means to consider and confuse these questions, where they can be explored rather than resolved.

Her Dark Materials is a performance piece, staged as an encounter between two characters:  a professed nun who happens to be a skilled archer, and a UFO. Both these figures have appeared ambiguously intertwined in Alice’s recent works, as if involved in a cat-and-mouse chase. Previously, the image of the UFO was a projection of our anxieties around rapid modernization and technological development.

Now, this twenty-first century god is rendered as an embroidered archery target the nun aims and shoots at repeatedly. Staged theatricality as a recorded broadcast of an archery practice with camp and pop culture nuances, the performance further complexifies the dynamic between the two subjects : on the one hand the nun embodies a striker, but her aim (object of both fear and fascination) is ever elusive, escaping her advances and her understanding.

The title borrows from Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials (who in turn borrowed his title from John Milton’s classic of religious disobedience Paradise Lost), in which a rebellion against an authoritative God unfolds across parallel universes. Drawing on this favourite of her childhood, the artist emulates a moment of tension in which humanity faces anxieties over truth and belief when met with the possibility of other cognitions capable of bending the mysterious materials from which creation itself is made.
